Moderate risk for severe weather in Texlahoma...

As Troy in Ft. Worth, Texas, mentioned, hail is not a "just hail" type thing. Hail can be very destructive and dangerous. I didn't mean to downplay it, and in light of yesterday's monstrous hail event, where there were 93 hail reports in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Louisiana. It fascinates me to hear the different objects that are used to compare hail... everyone has heard of baseball sized and golf ball sized, pea sized, dime, penny, nickel and quarter sized, but how many have heard of tennis ball sized hail? Hen egg sized hail? Ping pong ball sized hail? Those are some of the sizes I heard reported during yesterday's severe weather, predominantly large hail event. Baton Rouge, Louisiana saw the tennis ball sized hail. Can you imagine? You can click on the map graphic for detailed hail and wind reports from yesterday's weather outbreak.

Today, we are facing yet another highlighted area of a now moderate risk for severe weather in Texlahoma. Through most of the day, it appears to be another large hail event...

HOWEVER...IT APPEARS THAT LOW LEVEL SHEAR WILL BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR AN INCREASING TORNADO THREAT BY EARLY EVENING OVER MODERATE RISK AREA.
The slight risk for severe weather continues two days out, but my neck of the woods shouldn't see any change in weather until the weekend... suitably so, I will be out of town.

Busy day for me, so I will leave you with that...

Have a fabulous day!

  1. Hail is definitely not something to take lightly here in Texlahoma. I've seen grapefruit-sized hail and what it can do to cars and houses. Not pretty at all! As for the Mod Risk, I am getting ready to head out for some chasing, myself, since at the moment Skew-T sounding data was ripe enough to convince me it is worth it. Wish me luck!

  2. I can't even imagine grapefruit-sized frozen precip falling from the sky! Crazy! Good luck with your chase, Ken.

  3. last summer we had a supercell thunderstorm hit Marquette County and it dropped 2 inches of 5cm sized hail in the city of Marquette. An article in the newspaper here said that close to 95% of the houses in the MQT area had to have thier roofs and siding replaced due to damage(mine included) I cannot find the amount of money that was paid out in insurance claims. I just know it was a lot. If I find out I will let you know. I know that some of the houses are still having work done this summer.
It was actually a pretty awesome storm to witness though I don't think any realized what was happening until it was over.

  4. Carrie, that is some monstrous hail. I can't even imagine. I actually got a new roof several years ago after hail had been reported in the area. I never saw any hail... still have not seen any hail (except some pea sized stuff that was mixed in with rain in SD or NE last June.

  5. Hey Dew....no luck for me the other night. Low clouds with drizzle conditions made any sight lines non-existent. Here are some great pics and video of yesterday's outbreak.
