the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Wild, Wild WEATHER...

...THERE IS A HIGH RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING OVER PORTIONS OF EASTERN NEB...WESTERN IA...AND EXTREME SOUTHEAST SD...

...THERE IS A MDT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF NORTHERN KS...CENTRAL NEB... CENTRAL IA...SOUTHEAST SD...AND SOUTHWEST MN...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE TX PANHANDLE TO SOUTHERN WI...

...REGIONAL OUTBREAK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND TORNADOES EXPECTED TODAY OVER PARTS OF NEB/IA/SD...

STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER THE WARM SECTOR IN EASTERN NEB/WESTERN IA DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING IN REGION OF RELATIVELY WEAK CINH AND STRONG CAPE. THESE STORMS WILL BE IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF LOWER LCLS...STRONGER LOW LEVEL VERTICAL SHEAR/HELICITY...AND MORE SUBTLE FORCING. THESE FACTORS ARE EXPECTED TO RESULT IN A SEVERAL HOUR PERIOD OF DISCRETE SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF VERY LARGE HAIL AND POTENTIALLY STRONG TORNADOES. LOW LEVEL WINDS AND VERTICAL SHEAR CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN AFTER DARK IN THIS AREA WITH A SUSTAINED THREAT OF STRONG TORNADOES.
Check out the tornado probabilities... 30% likelihood that tornadoes will occur in that high risk area.A Public Severe Weather Outlook has been issued... If you live in any of these areas...
WESTERN IOWA
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA
EASTERN NEBRASKA
SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA

ELSEWHERE...SEVERE STORMS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE FROM...THE OKLAHOMA AND TEXAS PANHANDLES TO CENTRAL MINNESOTA.

THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
KEEP YOUR WEATHER RADIOS ON!!!

That said, I was struck by some of the statistics about this year's tornadic activity that I heard this morning on TWC. They claimed a year-to-date total of 924 tornadoes/tornado reports (the distinction between tornadoes and tornado reports is the likelihood that tornado reports include duplicate reports of the same tornado).According to the Storm Prediction Center, the tornado report total, as of May 28, 2008, is 1,199 tornadoes reported. The actual confirmed count through February is 236, compared to the reported figure over 300. Anyways... with TWC's reported 924, it breaks the record of tornado counts through May, which was set back in 1999 at 778 tornadoes. It generally blows that number away. As for May, which has also been an amazing year for tornadoes... the average tornadoes in May is 287, but at this point, we have had 481 reports, and there is a high risk for tornadoes today in the northern plains... Yes, it has been a much more active year than EVER recorded before.

Before I close for today, I want to thank Annie for sharing pics with me from her honeymoon up in the mountains. She spent a little time in Juliette, GA, where she stumbled upon this great attraction... I guess I'll be taking a little trip up to Juliette at some point... Dewdrop has just got to check out the "Dew Drop In"...

1535EDT Update: First PDS Tornado Watch issued, among 2 other watches...

1617EDT Update: Most likely a tornado headed for Stockville, NE, right now... TONS of spotters headed that way and setting up for intercept.1552EDT Update: Ugh! Why aren't I there?! I noticed Amos Magliocco on it... Maybe he'll have some good shots...

1714EDT Update: Still going...1854EDT Update: Looks like some action in Kearney, NE. I think I have been there...10 tornado reports so far... including...
2220 KEARNEY BUFFALO NE
2225 KEARNEY BUFFALO NE POWER FLASHES IN THE CITY OF KEARNEY
2235 3 N KEARNEY BUFFALO NE POWER LINES DOWN
2236 5 SW KEARNEY KEARNEY NE TORNADO REPORTED ON THE GROUND NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF 20TH AND VICTOR ROAD BY THE NEBRASKA STATE PATROL.
Have a great day!
