Fall has Fallen... and Dewdrop training...

Happy Sky Watch Friday!! Please visit Tom, Klaus, Sandy, Ivar, Wren, Fishing Guy and Imac's SKY WATCH BLOG to participate in Sky Watch Fridays, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Dot, the mother of this fabulous blogging event, was really onto something when she brainstormed this baby!!! It is so fascinating to see skies from all over the world!!! This week, I have decided to post a cloud shadow shot.I've posted and talked about crepuscular rays before, which are basically the sun's rays bouncing off of dust particles and other "stuff" in the atmosphere. Cloud shadows are basically the inverse of crepuscular rays. They aren't anticrepuscular rays, which are the other side of crepuscular rays produced at sunrise or sunset. Cloud shadows are just that; they are shadows cast by the clouds obstructing sunlight. Oftentimes, you will see cloud shadows between crepuscular rays. I found this particular cloud shadow striking because it travels up a good way into the sky.

Local weather today includes a lake wind advisory, which is the result of a pressure gradient that we find ourselves in... a high pressure system to the north, meeting with a low pressure system to the south, generates what could be considered a wind tunnel effect as wind is forced between those two systems. Add to that the cool temps, and we've got ourselves a good old fall day. Outside of that, nothing tropically speaking... no severe weather anywhere. SDS (Supercell Deprivation Syndrome) is really taking its toll. What's a storm chaser to do? Well, it appears that my chase team finds their own ways of entertaining themselves during times of weather hiatus.

So there I was, minding my own business, while I was on my mini-cation when I notice comments coming through on a new post on the team blog. Comments about me... so of course, curiosity got the best of me, and I hopped on over to see what all the fuss was about. It appears that Alabama Mike got his hands on a couple of my old elementary school pictures and posted them on the team blog. Here's the best part though... something I hadn't even thought about until Mikey made a keen observation. I went to Chase Elementary School. Chase School. How many other storm chasers actually have been to CHASE SCHOOL?! As a storm chaser, I really should have picked up on that... long before now. Where did y'all get your training? Anyone else go to "Chase School"? Dewdrop, Chase School graduate, Storm Chaser Extraordinaire. ;O)

Have a lovely day!

  13. Love the sundogs and the rays - both are real faves of mine! I'm working on my cloud IDs and appreciated your call on Mammatus on...oops I forgot who's SWF it was. Anyway, I usually travel with a kit bag of books (field guides for birds, butterflies, plants and clouds) plus bins and camera. As a result, I'm putting my chiropracter's kids through school.

  20. You've certainly done well as a Chase School alumna. ;-}

I have a cumulonimbus on my SkyWatch post today, but your mention of cloud shadows reminded me that I think I may have some shots of those buried away somewhere. Now I'll have to search for them!

  23. Beautiful photo, but slightly scary looking, too. I think if I saw that outside of my window I'd be concerned about what the weather was going to do.

  24. Dew: Thanks for all the great cloud information you share. It is surprising how something can hit home. What are the circular rings that you see through the rays? Is that the camera lens or another effect?

  35. Love the shot on the main Sky Watch page. Wonderful! And this one... is that fire I see in the picture? Were you talking about the clouds in this pic or the one on the Sky Watch blog? Is this smoke, clouds or both? I like both pics, just a little confused.

  44. Thank you for all the compliments on this and the sky watch blog. Thanks fort all the encouragment and funny comments about my "Chase School" discussion and pics (eek!) Truly is serendipity. Hope it made you smile!

Babooshka, what an inspiration you have been. We shall see what happens!

Deborah, Michele had the mammatus, I think.

Bobbie, please let me know when you've found them.

Beth, I'll see what we can dew... ;O)

Wren, If my memory serves... that was a beautiful day.

Fishing guy, circular rings??? Not sure I see what you're seeing. Could you elaborate?

    PJ, lol

2sweetnsaxy, no fire, unless you consider the sun a ball of fire. lol... the darker coloring about the clouds in the shot here is a cloud shadow... caused the the interference of the cloud in the sun shining from below. The one on the intro was a sun dog... like a rainbow in the clouds.

    Marie, Stop by anytime!

I am so grateful for the faith y'all have in my knowledge, to ask me for feedback on your shots. That really lifts me up. Thank you so much! I appreciate each of you!
