SKY WATCH FRIDAY time! Thanks to Dot and Tom, never forgotten founders of this great event. Come on, come fly with us!
Thanks to hosts: Klaus Sandy Sylvia Wren Louise Fishing Guy
Well, I am up to segment of our Spring Break where my wonderful groom and I took some time for ourselves to celebrate one year of marital bliss. We took a wonderful adventure up the coast of South Carolina, exploring all things splendid about the South Carolina coast. The trip can be divided into 3 parts, starting last Wednesday, as the 3 major stops along our journey were:
1. Hilton Head Island
2. St. Helena Island, specifically Beaufort and Hunting Island State Park
3. Charleston
What a wonderful adventure we had exploring and eating our way up the coast!
I'll guess I should start with Hilton Head Island for today's post, and I should first talk about my favorite sky shot from that first day. As we were traveling toward Hilton Head Island, we discovered this area off the road with great trees and a pier that was accessible near a boat launching ramp that was under construction. It was beautiful traveling into Hilton Head with all the little canals throughout. Having the sun setting over this one with a sun dog visible was a nice touch. It was quite chilly and windy, but we enjoyed it. Before we arrived in South Carolina though, while still on the road between home and Savannah, we passed this charming little church, which I had to stop and shoot. It was so delightfully charming. Unfortunately, some bozo decided that a power pole needed to be placed RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT...Fortunately, we arrived at Hilton Head Island in time for a late dinner at a Fodor's top pick for the area, Old Fort Pub. What an amazing place that was. We arrived without reservations, but the time we waited allowed us an opportunity to explore the old fort, which included a nicely laid path through the woods, with lovely signs recording the importance of each landmark and bunker. It was a nice stroll, while we waited on our table. When we were seated, we were treated to a lovely window seat overlooking the bay there. The food was AMAZING! They send out these scrumptious flaky salmon dip filled pastries as an appetizer that melted in our mouths, compliments of the incredible chef. The meal was amazing, and the dessert...
What a perfect day, weatherwise, it was to explore Hilton Head Island. We did what it seems a lot of people who visit Hilton Head Island like to do, we rented a bike to enjoy the many bike paths streaming through the island. We were a little frustrated to have our route redirected. You cannot enter Sea Pines on a bike unless you have a special pass, which we did not have, and unfortunately, they hold the Harbour Town Lighthouse hostage with the $5 drive-on fee. We still explored and had a great time. We even stopped at a charming little art shop and painted an anniversary plate. After we explored the island and hit the beach, even catching a solar halo while out at the beach,... we did turn in our bike, hop in the jeep and head for Harbour Town, after passing through the Sea Pines security trolls. I'm glad we decided to go over because the lighthouse there was beautiful, and what I didn't realize is that you can see from it the 18th hole of the Heritage Classic golf tournament, which they were actually setting up for during our visit. We did climb to the top of the lighthouse (my first time climbing a lighthouse), which contained lots of neat stories and information along the way. Finally, we stood at the Dania cutoff canal and watched the pelicans dive for their late afternoon snacks... when we saw this amazing site.God is good. I'll cover the rest soon. If there were anything besides this dry pollen-full, high pressure system sitting on top of us, voiding us of all weather, I'd have something relevant to talk about... until then, our awesome trips it is!
Have a fabulous day!
