Even the Hobbit gets weather... SDS is bad

I was reading THE HOBBIT this morning, by J. R. R. Tolkien, and I enjoyed the desrciption offered of a thunderstorm encountered on the Hobbit's adventure...

All was well until one day they met a thunderstorm-more than a thunderstorm, a thunder-battle. You know how terrific a really big thunderstorm can be down in the land and in a river-valley; especially at times when two thunderstorms meet and clash. More terrible still are thunder and lightning in the mountains at night, when storms come up from the East and West and make war. The lightning splinters on the peaks, and rocks shiver, and great crashes split the air and go rolling and tumbling into every cave and hollow; and the darkness is filled with overwhelming noise and sudden light.
In the height of SDS (Supercell Deprivation Syndrome), it is easy to let that description get me excited, suddenly, I am wisped away to a place where lightning and thunder exist. Alas, the Dewvoid has been tough to tolerate.
The local weather forecast has taken a flip flop, and what was expected to be clear and cool... well, let me give you the guys' wording:
INSTEAD OF A GENERAL CLEARING TREND FOR THIS AFTERNOON AS WAS ANTICIPATED AT THIS TIME YESTERDAY...WE WILL NOW LIKELY BE STUCK WITH A CLOUDY...COOL...AND GLOOMY DAY WITH LIGHT RAIN LINGERING INTO THE AFTERNOON.
So, there you have it, folks; the forecast calls for a gloomy day. Is that an official weather term? Good grief. Looks like timing was a little off, so an initial clearing trend will occur tonight/tomorrow (though GFS shows a chance of SLEET in the northern CWA... No worries folks, that is HIGHLY UNLIKELY!) and things are set up for a "quite cool" Friday, until another diturbance moves in, bringing light rain to Friday night/Saturday morning, before the big clearing arrives... Tuesday is when the next strong shortwave event arrives, which will allow the opportunity here for a
POTENTIALLY BENEFICIAL RAIN EVENT.
Good! We can definitely use the rain, of course, behind that is more cold temps... The good news is that they have dropped "hard freeze from tonight and tomorrow night's forecasts, and there is some doubt that we will even get into freezing temps. Woohoo! Just an aside, the pic above was taken about a year ago. I have no current pics to share... so I am hitting the stock to liven things up a bit.

That's it for me. Busy day!

Ciao,

  1. That southern branch of the jet stream is keeping you folks cloudy and damp. I wouldn't be surprised to hear sleet reports on the northern fringes of the precip....

It is so cold up here today...the sun isn't overcoming this Arctic airmass at all...
