Flooding in South Central Georgia

I drove around yesterday after my trip to the grocery store, just to see how things were going with the river. I still had groceries in my vehicle, so I didn't do the exploration justice picture-wise, but clearly, the river has gone well beyond its banks. The area in this first pic is sort of a soggy wetlands area generally, but until this rain, it was completely dry. It lies on the outer edges of the Withlacoochie River as the river travels through the northern part of town. We remain under a flood warning.

THE FLOOD WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE WITHLACOOCHEE RIVER UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE...OR UNTIL THE WARNING IS CANCELLED.
* AT 4:30 PM SUNDAY THE STAGE WAS 20.8 FEET; FLOOD STAGE IS 13.0 FEET.

* MINOR FLOODING IS OCCURRING AND MINOR TO MODERATE FLOODING IS FORECAST.

* FORECAST...THE RIVER WILL CONTINUE RISING TO NEAR 20.9 FEET BY AFTER MIDNIGHT TOMORROW THEN BEGIN FALLING.

* IMPACT...AT 22.5 FEET...SEVERAL ROADS GO UNDER WATER. WATER INTRUDES INTO BACKYARDS OF FOLKS ON BF'S PARENTS' STREET (that is not what the guys said, but the road names mean nothing to most of y'all). ADDITIONAL ROADS DOWNSTREAM MAY BE AFFECTED.
The above picture shows the river creeping up into the cemetery that sits on relatively high land along the river. Usually, you don't see any water here, at all. The banks lie well within the tree line in normal conditions. The above picture shows how far the water has traveled beyond the bridge. Usually, the water only travels under a portion of the bridge here.

Looks like the SPC has placed my neck of the woods in yet another slight risk area for severe thunderstorms for tomorrow. The system will be passing through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama today, and the remnants of that should inpact me tomorrow, mostly as a lined out squall (shocking, I know), but some discrete cells could form ahead of the line, especially considering the strength of the deep-layer shear forecasted, which would suggest a potential for rotating storms... supercells and bow echoes. I will keep an eye on that to see if a chasetunity develops.

As I have already shared, bf is on a trip to New Orleans. During the course of his trip, he has been sending pics to share his experiences... One pic that he shared was a sign the contained "The Creed of the Sociopathic Obsessive-Compulsive"... don't know why he'd think I would want to see that... (wink, wink). Anyways, here is the creed:
1) If anything can go wrong, FIX IT!
2) When given a choice, take both.
3) Multiple projects lead to multiple successes.
4) If you can't beat them, join them. Then beat them.
5) Do it by the book--but be the author of the book.
6) Start at the top, then work your way up.
7) If you can't win, change the rules.
8) If you can't change the rules, then ignore them.
9) When forced to compromise, ask for more.
10) If it's worth doing, it's got to be done RIGHT NOW.
11) Perfection is NOT optional.
12) Patience is a virtue, but persistence to the point of success is a blessing.
13) Don't walk when you can run.
14) When faced without a challenge, make one.
15) "No" simply means to begin again at one higher level.
16) When in doubt: THINK!
17) The squeaky wheel gets replaced.
18) Bureaucracy is a challenge to be conquered with a righteous attitude, a tolerance for stupidity, and a bulldozer when necessary.
19) The faster you move, the slower time passes, the longer you live.
Can't see how that would apply to me... lol He also sent a cool pic of the statue of Andrew Jackson with the St. Louis Cathedral in the background that I thought was pretty cool. He has sent some other pics, but in the interest of keeping the rating on this blog family oriented, I shall refrain from posting those. lol. He'd probably have better pics to share if his camera wasn't stolen the first night... along with his Garmin. Welcome to New Orleans, right?

Now, I saw on Katney's Kaboodle site, an Odd Shots Challenge that I thought was pretty cool, so here is my contribution to that. This is a shot of my fire pit on New Year's... don't know what they were burning, but firefighters were standing by. To participate in this cool challenge, click on the "Odd Shots" icon.Toodles,

  2. Cool, hot shot! Your river shots are interesting, too... wasn't your area in drought just a few short weeks ago?

  3. Great piX. Amazing colors. Do I spy the vague outline of a heart in those flames...?

  4. Dragonstar, thanks so much. I was mesmerized by the flames.

jc, Appreciate it! Yes, we were and still are in a drought, but ours is not as bad as in some other areas. The rain was definitely much needed.

    dxymiss, Thx! A heart? Awesomeness!

    Thanks, y'all for stopping by!

  8. Absolutely beautiful odd shot! I see the heart too -- pppurple under the blue in the middle. . .

  9. I remember that fire and recognize that bridge in the picture! That OCD thing cracked me up...is he implying that you are a sociopath?? LOL! I need the creed for the Paranoid OCD. I can't believe his stuff was stolen the first night!! I want to see the "unshowable" pictures when I come up next. My mom showed me pictures of flooding at her house. Looks like it's feast or famine with rain water in Georgia!

  10. Just came back for another peek. I see a 2nd heart above the purple one I saw earlier. . . It is the blue area just above the purple in the center and much bigger than the purple heart I saw earlier.

  11. I am going to start at the odd shot and work backwards. Welcome to Odd Shots. Your fire photo is incredible. So is your bf's Jackson/cathedral shot. It would be fodder for the odd shots theme as well.

I like the creed. Some of it fits me, all of it fits some people I know.

Flood? Pardon my geography but I thought there was a drought. I hadn't heard the lastest, or are you far from that Georgia/Florida drought area.

  12. I think today may bring some action to you this morning. I'm watching your area closely. My blood is starting to flow again with spring upon us.

  13. Becky, Thanks, girl! I thought so too. I couldn't seem to stop taking pics of it when the colors started coming into it. I don't what all the "boys" (in quotation marks because they are actually "men") threw into that fire. I just hope that the long term affects aren't harmful...

Paulie, Wow! You liked it so much you came back again to check it out. Awesome! Thanks! I see the hearts. It suddenly becomes reminiscent of a Survivor song... uh oh, now "Burning Heart" is stuck in my head... Thanks for the visits! I'll be checking yours out shortly. :O)

Annie, that was fun stuff, that New Year's party. We will have to do it again this year, and maybe this time Scott can come. B loves to pick on my OCD. It's a favorite hobby of his. He doesn't believe I am a sociapath, but he likes to pretend. The other pics are just nothing. Just didn't think I needed to put them here. I can send them to you. Definitely feast or famine with the rain and more headed this way. As for the stuff being stolen... all I can say is, I am not surprised... I am not a fan of New Orleans. When I was there, a man was pick-pocketed in the lobby of my hotel. They told me NOT to carry a purse because it would most likely be stolen.

Katney, THANKS! I am so glad people are enjoying the fire shot. I thought it was the coolest fire I had ever seen, so I am glad others are getting to appreciate it. I let bf know you like his shot. I've just recently gotten him to start using his camera. As for the flood/drought... we are very much still well within drought parameters, as our summer and fall were exceptionally dry, which in turn dried out the land to the point where it wasn't ready to absorb such a large quantity of rain in such a short time, so the water builds up causing flooding. Go figure... like Annie said, feast or famine. Thanks for visiting. I love the odd shots idea!! I will try to participate every Monday. Thanks for doing it.

  14. SCM, Ah, welcome! Where have you been...? SDS have you down and out? I am keeping a close watch on radar today. Looks like things will start firing up shortly. Glad to hear from you. :O)

  15. Yea, i shut it down for the winter. I check your blog all the time, but with a 2 year old in the house I have to pick my spots to get away and chase. I saved up my leave slips for this spring :) I'll get the blog cranking back up again soon. Might get a small storm today, but I want the big one. Keep up the great work, your blog really rocks. The whales mouth cloud pictures from the other day were great, i wouldn't call that chasing nothing :)

  16. Mikey, Figured as much with you just dropping off the face of the Earth, but I saw you checking in, so I knew you were ok. A 2 year old, terrible twos... just know that it doesn't last forever... nope, eventually, you'll have a teenager... so much better... lol. Thanks for the blog compliment. You are the second person in as many days to tell me that, so I am glad to hear that my blog rocks and people are enjoying it. I certainly enjoy it and the friendships that have generated from it... such as my friendship with you. As for the whale's mouth clouds... shhh, don't tell Meso Mike, but I agree. It was pretty spectacular.

  18. Jess, Yeah, it's pretty cool. I love taking pictures, so it's right up my alley. lol. Skull, didn't see that one. I guess it's like looking at clouds for shapes. Best blogger? Thanks, Jess. I really appreciate that. I am so glad you enjoy it. My bf used to tell me all about the storms he saw, double rainbows... etc... I would say, "Well, where's the picture?" "Uh..." He has no excuse now with his camera phone. lol I've missed you, Jess. Things are great!
