It's amazing to me how drastically different weather conditions can be, just throughout this country. Currently, I am experiencing near 50 degree mornings and near 80 degree daytime temps, beautiful skies, and dry conditions. If you travel just a bit to the north, there are extreme drought conditions, a little bit further north than that, there is major flooding and more rain coming today to those stricken areas. North of that, they are experiencing snow storms. South and west of that, severe weather with hail reports already feeding in... Good grief. If you don't like the weather... no worries, just drive a little. You'll get something totally different...
(I liked this pic this morning. Hopefully, with all the rain to the north, it'll feed down into the rivers this way, making a waterfall excursion well worth the trip. I took this while I was at Anna Ruby Falls this past summer.)
Let's discuss the local situation. Right now, it looks like the next weather producer should arrive on Saturday, as a cold front sweeps into the area out of the Northeast... hmmm... interesting. The models aren't in agreement at all with regard to how this system will impact my neck of the woods what kind, how much and when questions are all up in the "air"... (ha ha, pretty punny, huh? Sorry, weather geek humor... ) Anyways, they aren't expecting anything interesting, as the SPC hasn't forecast a severe thunderstorm event. The NWS isn't really seeing much rain potential for here. I guess we have entered wait and see mode as we will have to see how the models conform as that time gets closer. The good news is that the cold air should only be temporary with this one... whew.
Here is the really interesting wording in the AFD from the NWS: ON WEDNESDAY...AS AN EXTRATROPICAL (OR EVEN SUBTROPICAL?) LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DEVELOPS NEAR SOUTH FL. DIFFERENCES ARISE BETWEEN THE GFS AND ECMWF IN THEIR HANDLING OF THIS LOW...AS THE GFS TAKES A CLOSED SURFACE LOW NORTHWARD ALONG THE FL EAST COAST AND THE ECMWF TAKES AN OPEN WAVE WESTWARD INTO THE CENTRAL GULF.
Did Kelly just seriously forecast a possibility of a subtropical cyclone?! Well, Jeff, sounds to me like things might just kick into gear a little bit early this year. Just what the doctor ordered... :O) Holy guacomole!
Great news, the CoCoRaHS site in Georgia is up and connected, and you can go sign up now. The official "go live" for Georgia is still May 1st, but you can now sign up in Georgia and start reporting precipitation data!!! Click on the link in the right sidebar to sign up or click here to become a volunteer in this GREAT Program. I am cuckoo for CoCoRaHS!!!!
Have a lovely day,

Yeah...the models are playing with my emotions. Wouldn't that just be fun to play around with a Sub-tropical organized storm in early April.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a early April Fools joke from the WX prog guidance?
"Slap the ECMWF/GFS around a bit"
I just about fell out of my chair when I read that one... can't imagine what it did for you... lol. It would be cool to be playing with the tropics in April. What is the earliest start they have had in recorded history?
ReplyDeleteWx has been nice but boring around here. I'm just glad it's warming out. Some folks here are starting to use the "D" word again, as in drought! Maybe we'll get back into a wet pattern...
ReplyDeleteNice and boring... darn. The whole "D" thing is still relevant up your way, isn't it? Have y'all recovered?
ReplyDeleteBring on the moisture!!!
