This is turning out to be quite a year for the tropics. If this season start is indicative of the type of season we are looking at... hang onto y'alls' hats, cause it's fixin' to get windy!
In the northwest corner of the Atlantic, we have Tropical Storm Cristobal, holding his own as he drifts off to sea. He is not a threat to anything... just stirring up the water out that way.
In our western Gulf of Mexico, we have the likely future Hurricane Dolly. Tropical Storm Dolly is heading toward extreme northern Mexico/southeastern Texas, expanding to make landfall as a hurricane. Her current pressure is significantly lower than last time, so I expect that the NOAA plane in the area will determine her to be strong enough to be declared a hurricane. Her satellite presentation is getting more and more impressive. Folks along that coastline should be rushing to complete final preparations.
Finally, in our far eastern Atlantic, off the coast of Africa, we have a strong Cape Verde tropical wave that is about to move over cold water, but still has a shot at development. Crazy...
5PM Update: Hurricane Dolly!!! 75mph. Still creeping toward Texas. There is a complex of severe cells headed down from the north... severe thunderstorm warnings are popping up all over the south. I have thunder here now. Have a lovely day!

1800: looking pretty unstable! !
ReplyDeleteI agree. Catch us some CG, Mike!
ReplyDeleteDolly...what a ridiculous name for a ferocious storm. That makes me think of big boobs and over-sized wigs singing nice songs, not STORM. This must be the year that all the ridiculous names are being rotated. I would even be willing to bet they secretly have a list called The Most Ridiculous Names For Storms List. I can't wait for hurricane Shanaynay, she should be full of attitude!
ReplyDeleteI bet they do have such a list. The names though have been getting more and more outlandish... much be PC-ness. Shanaynay... you crack me up.
