Out of the blue...

What a storm last night ended up offering!!! In the midst of the 5th most severely active day of the year, my little county in south Georgia experienced some thunderstorm related wind damage where a tree fell on an apartment complex not far from my home and several trees were reported down further south throughout the county.I have heard reports of power outages, and mine actually flickered off during the course of the storm... and then, this morning, my internet was out.

It was an amazing storm. As I left work late yesterday evening, I took a detour to shoot some amazing towers, actually a well formed storm at that point. I was amazed at their size, and they were beautifully lit, but well to my east... I had to pick up Mini-Dew, so I was quickly on my way... towers continued to build as the night wore on, and by the time my dear son and his wonderful girlfriend arrived for a very late and super-yummy dinner prepared by my wonderful groom, the show was on at my house. Frequent (every second) lightning lit up the sky, crashing all around us with powerful booms, as it struck nearby, causing the cable and lights to flicker several times, which caused me to unplug the computer, making me blind to what was going on, and since we had company, I did not run outside to shoot pics or call all my storm chasing buds for weather updates. I was mindful of what was going on, and my weather radio was on... The rain came down in horizontal buckets full. Literally, it was pounding down sideways in sheets (over half an inch in all), and the trees were being tossed about like crazy, their leaves being pulled with a force. Occasionally, we heard the endearing tink of hail mixed in with the ferocious downpour, but when I looked outside, I saw nothing bouncing.

Like I said though, with yesterday being the active day that it was, our random thunderstorm wind event seems pretty mild. ... but it was quite spectacular, in my opinion. I didn't get any picture in the midst of it, but I took it all in and very much appreciated the thunderstorm.

Have a lovely day!

  1. Boy, was it ever a storm! I live 5.5 miles from the swamp where I wordk, but when I got here this morning we had all kinds of trees come down. I hate losing trees! I took some photos, one will be up tomorrow for Skywatch.
