Man, is it HOT or what?!

Another floral pic.

Well look at this... we have been issued our very own heat advisory... finally. Apparently our heat index got up above 110 yesterday, and things are expected to stay this way through Friday. The local guys describe yesterday as "a brutally hot and humid day", and that it was. Albany, GA recorded a 106 degree temp... dewpoints are the kicker though, threw heat indices well into the triple digits all over the CWA. After Friday, this ridiculous heat-wave-inducing ridge is forecasted to push aside and allow a low pressure "disturbance" to move in from the north, hopefully allowing some much needed relief in the form of precipitation. If nothing else, it will help the temps to subside some. Today, with only a chance of isolated afternoon showers, we will not get any relief, more than likely.

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED BUILDING...AND AVOID STRENUOUS OUTDOOR ACTIVITY. ALL THOSE WORKING OUTSIDE NEED TO TAKE THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID EXTREME DEHYDRATION OR POSSIBLE HEAT STROKE. DRINK PLENTY OF COLD LIQUIDS... TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS...AND TRY TO GET INTO AN AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENT FOR PART OF THE TIME.
They are expecting the heat advisory to extend through Friday. My heart goes out to the folks who work outdoors. It's easy for me to take my A/C for granted, but I know the people working in this heat are suffering. Stay hydrated folks. To quote the NWS in Huntsville as quoted on Alabama Mike's blog:
HEAT IS THE NUMBER ONE WEATHER RELATED KILLER.
That is the truth, and warnings should be heeded.

When I turned on the TV this morning, I was suprised and concerned to see that parts of New York including the area of New York City were under a Doppler indicated tornado warning. The idea of a tornado dropping in New York City is frightening. Unless it dropped in Central Park, there aren't too many other parts there that aren't covered with skyscrapers or people. I believe it would be devastating. Have they done an episode of "It Could Happen Tomorrow" on that scenario? I am not up on those shows, but I imagine that would be just horrible. I know when I visited Utah several years back, you could still see the path of the 1999 (in August, btw) Salt Lake City F2 tornado that devastated parts of that city.

Looking at the tropics, there is nothing looking too enticing in the very short term, but GFS puts a hurricane in the Florida peninsula around the 22nd of August. Wait and see.

  1. I would take this advisory seriously:

    DRINK PLENTY OF COLD LIQUIDS...
Does this include mudslides, beer, frozen magaritas? No problem there in drinking "plenty".

    TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS...
I think that part comes quite naturally for me. Does "frequent" and "constant" mean the same thing?

AND TRY TO GET INTO AN AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENT FOR PART OF THE TIME.
How about most of the time? Combine that with the "plenty of cold liquids" advice above, and I see nothing to fear from this heat advisory. :-)

  3. We had a tornado rip through downtown Nashville in April of 1998, knocking down several of the booms working on the construction of the Tennessee Titan's stadium. Quite interesting to see it from a camera installed on top of a tall building....I don't recall if it was an F3 or 4.....will look it up and get back with you.
