Tornadoes in Alabama on March 4th

Though nothing happened locally, the National Weather Service office in Birmingham, Alabama, has been commendably prompt in publishing reports about the two tornadoes that ripped through Alabama yesterday. This report includes photographs of the damage from the EF-1 tornadoes in both Eutaw (Greene County), Alabama, and in Northside/Samantha (Tuscaloosa County) Albama, during the March 4 storm. Feel free to click on the NWS Birmingham pictures of the damage in Alabama, to link to the report.I actually have a few comments that I would like to make about this:

1. I was watching some coverage of the tornado damage in Greene County, Alabama, this morning on TWC, and they were interviewing one of those impacted by the storm (25 homes were damaged by the EF-1 tornado in Greene County... 4 majorly... 1 destroyed), and the man said regarding the storm, something along the lines of... I woke up to the sound of the roof being peeled off my house! (It struck just after midnight... God, I hate nighttime events.)OK, folks, time for a little review... the sound he should have been awakened to was the EAS tone on his weather radio blaring, warning him of the tornado that was approaching his area, so he could seek shelter. The outcome of that could have been terribly tragic. Thank God it wasn't worse. I will go ahead and beat this dead horse... If you don't have a weather radio, go out and buy one right NOW! Stop what you're doing, and buy a weather radio! I'll even save you the trouble of looking, click on the pic of the weather radio here, and you can purchase one RIGHT NOW! It could mean the difference between life and death. YES, it is that important!

2. Have I mentioned how impressive it is that Birmingham already has a storm report out there from the MARCH 4th (yes, yesterday) event with pics....? Awesomeness! Peachtree City might take a few notes... oops, did I type that?

3. I don't mean any disrespect, but... just looking at the pictures of the tornado damage from yesterday's tornadoes, reviewing radar captures from the February 26th severe weather outbreak here, and hearing people talk about that storm, compared with what I SAW first-hand... I am tending to throw my support behind Alabama Mike's theory that there were possibly 3 tornadoes in February 26th in South Georgia. Sure, the one in Hahira was most likely a little EF-0, and I have not seen the damage in Clyattsville or Thomasville first-hand, but my gut tells me that something more exists than the story that's been told. Sorry guys... just my opinion.

I watched yesterday as nothing happened locally, and things got all fired up with Severe Thunderstorm warnings and a few Tornado warnings lighting up the GR graphic in the Carolinas. There are a significant number of wind damage reports covering north Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, east Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky. Clearly a damaging wind event up that way, and here's the crazy part; there was still a strong squall line up in New England (yes, New England) this morning!!! I can't tell you how bizarre I found it to see a south Georgia looking squall line over Hartford, Connecticut on the radar! Strange weather we're having.

That's all I've got for now. It is clear that the existence of the Dewvoid is still up for debate (PS That was pretty funny, Rick.)... I will have to devise a poll to determine your thoughts... yep, please vote in the sidebar. :O)

Have a lovely day!

  1. Great comment about Wx radio. That message needs to be put out there more and more.

I agree about Birmingham NWS. They are great! The tornadoes struck around 12-1 a.m. The media was given EF ratings before the 11 a.m. news the same day, approx. 10 hours after the event!!!

I will restrain myself from saying anything else on here about the "tornadoes" in SGA last week. But I may talk to you about a theory I have next time we speak...

  2. Definitely, we need to get the word out about weather radios. Every house should have one... They should be as common as smoke detectors.

Sure, feel free to share away. I look forward to hearing your opinion.
